An earthquake in Dragonfly class!

As part of our Geography topic this term ‘Earth Matters’ we have been learning about Earthquakes and how they happen. Yesterday we learnt that the magnitude of earthquakes are measured on the Richter scale which indicates the amount of energy released at the earthquakes source. We also had a look at a seismograph and learnt that it is an instrument used to detect and record ground motion caused by seismic waves that are generated by earthquakes. So to consolidate our learning we had a go at creating our own Earthquakes and measuring their seismic waves on our home made seismographs!

Dragonflies trip to Xplore!

Yesterday, in Dragonflies we had our trip to Xplore! We had a fantastic day exploring the different hands on exhibits, as well as an excellent workshop all about light and sound. We learnt all about refraction, the dangers of UV light, shadows, and an excellent demonstration to consolidate our learning about how light travels in straight lines! The children all had a fantastic time and represented our school fabulously.

No Pens Day In Dragonfly class

On Wednesday we had a lovely day looking at other ways to communicate other than using pens or pencils! This was a chance for children to put their pens down, talk, listen, and take part in lots of pen-free activities.

We had a go at communicating through Morse code, where we used pasta and cubes to represent the dots and lines to make messages for each other to work out what they meant. We also had a go at communicating in Makton to some of our favourite songs as well as finally acting out a play in groups without words focusing on our actions and expressions. A great day was had by all!

Science in Dragonflies

In science we are looking at sound. This afternoon we were exploring how sound can change over a distance. As part of this we created string telephones to demonstrate how sound travels. We discovered that we could hear clearly through the cups as the string and the cups are solid, so the particles are much closer together than the particles in the air, which is a gas. The sound energy can travel from particle to particle far easier in the solid string telephone, so the sound of our voices were louder over the same distance than it was in the air. We had a great time discovering how sound travels over distance!
