This term, the Year 1 & 2 children in Hedgehog Class have been learning about making strong structures. They’ve learnt new skills such as using a hacksaw and consolidated their learning from last term on safely using a glue gun. This morning, they have been busy making their toy castles, concentrating on making a structure that will be strong enough to be played with. This afternoon, they will complete their finishing techniques to make them look even better and then evaluate their final product. They can’t wait to take them home tomorrow already!
Yesterday at forest school, the Reception, Year 1 & 2 children had a fantastic time making some nettle soup! They used the nettle nippers that they made from wood last week to pick some nettles and then cooked them with the rest of the ingredients in a pan on the camp fire. What a clever bunch they are! We were so proud of all of the children for trying the soup, even if they weren’t too sure on what it would taste like. A few of them even asked for seconds!
Yesterday, the Year 1 & 2 children in Hedgehog Class learnt how to use a hacksaw as part of their learning about measuring and cutting materials in Design and Technology. We talked through all of the safety aspects of using a hacksaw and then had a go. They all did some absolutely fantastic listening and everyone was able to safely and successfully cut some small pieces of wood. Well done team!
On Wednesday, Year 6 travelled to Lichfield for a day of activities in the Cathedral organised by the Lichfield Diocese.
It was fairly unanimous that the children really enjoyed it! Not only did the building amaze them, but the tasks were engaging and challenging too.
To top off a great day, two Headteacher’s awards were also earned. During a singing activity, a pupil with additional needs from another school wanted to perform her song for the group. However, when none of her peers volunteered to perform with her, our Harry L and Liam raised their hands and asked, “Excuse us Sir, would Ella like us to perform with her?” They then performed Ella’s song, ‘Happiness is like a hug’. It was a special moment which epitomised the kindness of our children. Well done Harry and Liam!
Mrs Dyke and I both had a great day – thank you Owls 🦉 you’re brilliant!
⭐️ JUBILEE FUN RUN TOTAL ⭐️
We’re excited to be able to announce the total raised from the jubilee sponsored fun run held at school just before the half term holiday!! You all raised a total of £731.50 and thanks to all those that completed the gift aid sponsor forms, Mrs Aspinall placed a claim with the HMRC for a further £176.63 in gift aid. Therefore, the TOTAL for the fun run is:£908.13!!!! 😁.
Carol Aspinall (Friends):
“That is a truly fantastic amount for such a small school to have raised and I am really proud to be part of such a fantastic school community, well done everyone!! With previous events and fund raising, we are now well on the way to having raised a very large part of the monies we need to be able to build a super new adventure playground at the school and hope to be able to book this for the next school year which will be fantastic! Thank you all.”
Fun Fest on 16th July next! 😁
Yesterday, the children in Hedgehog Class learnt about the Jamaican national flower which is called a “Lignum Vitae”. “Lignum Vitae” is a Latin name meaning “Wood of Life”. It is a short tree, native to tropical America and the West Indies. It has blue flowers and orange-yellow fruit. The Lignum Vitae is also a very useful tree as it has medicinal properties!
After we had learnt lots of new information about the Jamaican national flower, we then did some sketches of it. The children then did these sketches into some polystyrene tiles, used rollers to cover them in block paint and then printed them on to some paper. We can’t wait to get these displayed in school!
What a way to start the day! Hedgehog Class are carrying on with their Jamaican arts week theme and starting their day by joining in with some Jamaican dancing! Click the link below to see the dancing…
