Hot Cross Buns

In R.E. we have been learning about the cross as a symbol of Easter. Today we learned about hot cross buns and how they can be used to represent parts of the Easter story. We learned the hot cross bun rhyme, tasted hot cross buns and used scented playdough to make our own.

This week in Hedgehogs

This week in Hedgehogs we have really enjoyed our first week of learning about Under the Sea. We have found out about what might live under the sea and the life cycle of a sea turtle. We have used the small world lots in the tuff tray and enjoyed playing in the water and foam! We have also explored bubbles and learned about submarines. We made submarines in the construction area and have begun to make a big submarine for us to use in our role play over the next few weeks. Now we are especially looking forward to finding out more about sharks and orcas!

We have also started the process of growing some potatoes and learned how to chit potatoes ready for planting in a couple of weeks. Our plan is to grow our own potato salad to eat in the summer term!

Worm Charming

Today we decided to test some of the different methods we learnt we Kris on Tuesday to see if we could charm some worms out of the ground on the school field. We chose four of the methods; worm grunting with two sticks, pouring soapy water on the ground, paddling on the ground like a gull and singing to the worms. All of the methods worked, but we found out that the worm grunting was definitely the most effective.

Birdwatching in Hedgehogs

We’ve had a lovely week in Hedgehogs this week, learning all about British birds, especially those that we are likely to find in our locality. We have made binoculars, learnt how to identify different species by their appearance, been bird spotting as part of the RSPB Birdwatch, and recreated our favourite garden bird.

Young Voices

On Tuesday the Young Voices choir had a fabulous day and evening performing along with other schools at the BP Pulse Arena in Birmingham. It was the final concert after months of hard work learning all the songs and dance moves. As well as the singing with other schools, we accompanied special singing guests Souparnika Nair from Britain’s Got Talent, Tommy Blaize from Strictly Come Dancing, and our favourite MC Grammar. We also danced along with Urban Strides street dance company. We were very tired by the end of the day, but it was well worth it!

Andy Goldsworthy Inspired Frozen Art

This week we have been looking at art by Andy Goldsworthy including sculptures using ice. We used a range of natural materials and water to create images and then left them outside overnight to freeze. We are very pleased with our final pieces of frozen artwork.

Winter Hunt!

In Hedgehogs we are learning all about Winter. We have been for a winter walk around school to spot signs of winter in our environment. We found ice on frozen puddles, frozen plants, catkins and frosty fences. We also talked about how the grass was crunchy under our feet and that we could see our breath!

Our Christian Values Homework

At the end of each month we are going to be setting a homework task based on our Christian Value for that month. This is for you to look at, discuss and explore as a family.

As our Christian Value in November’s Worship was Love, we would like you to create a piece of work to show what love means to you and your family. This can be presented however you like and is due in on the 12th December.
